Diva Degree of Difficulty:

Katy Perry (tedious and annoying at times)

Here’s What You Need:

image

  • tissue paper (10 sheets per color)
  • scissors
  • curling ribbon
  • spray adhesive
  • glitter!

This project is super easy but for a more fabulous effect you’ll want to make multiple pom-poms, so it’s always a good idea to trick a group of friends into helping you. Try inviting them over for drinks and a cheese plate. Have scissors and stacks of tissue paper waiting for them when they get there. It’s also a good idea to have music playing. Try a TLC Spotify station because no one can turn down crafting to TLC or Destiny’s Child. If they do, kindly ask them to leave because they don’t understand you and are probably a pretty bad friend anyway. Now that they are gone let’s get started!

Lay sheets of tissue paper out by color in stacks of 10.

image

Here’s a helpful hint, you are going to need lots of tissue paper but you don’t have to go broke, especially since you just spent a ton on expensive cheese for your bougie friends. We’ll talk more about entertaining later but for now try the gift bag section at a dollar store. Dollar Tree never disappoints and it’s great for people watching!

image

From one end start making 1 inch accordion folds. It helps to flip the stack over between each fold you make.

image

Fold in half and make a crease.

image

Unfold to get one long folded strip. With your scissors make small cuts on the outside edges of the crease on both sides but don’t cut all the way through. This will hold your curling ribbon in place.

With the ribbon tie a knot around the center. You will cut the ribbons at different lengths to tie your pom-poms in cascading clusters.

It should look like this:

Or think of it as a ridiculous hair bow like this:

Before you start fluffing your pom-poms, cut the tips into points or rounded tips. This will give your tissue balls a softer floral appearance.

image

Try cutting different sizes and tips!

image

By now the process has become pretty monotonous and it’s always a good idea, when crafting, to take little brain breaks.

Just The Tip:

Stay sharp with things like word puzzles, sudoku, or picture games like the ones below.

You remember Sesame Street, can you guess which one of these things does NOT belong here? Which one is inappropriately different?  Your friends can play along too!

image

If you guessed Katy “McDonald” Perry you are correct! Now that you have the hang of it let’s try another one. It’s a little more difficult so take your time.

image

Sure, we will accept Kim as a correct answer but this was a bit of a trick question. The real answer is ALL but Beyoncé. None of these people should ever be pictured with Beyoncé, much less block what she is wearing!

You’re a Fluffer Now!
Now  that our brains are sharpened it’s time to fluff out our pom-poms! Start pulling each sheet towards the center on by one. Start with the first half pulling 5 sheets out toward you. Flip over, pull the remaining 5 sheets toward the center again. You will do the same for the other half. A total of 20 sheets will be tugged and fluffed!

Your pom-poms are blossoming before your very eyes! The only thing missing now is GLITTER!

Spray with adhesive.

image

Just a hand full of glitter and you’re done!

image

You are ready to string these up and decorate. These tissue treasures will help set the perfect tone for any gay brunch or party. Another good use for these pom-poms: hang them from your Festival Freak Flag. Leave no question about your queer pride in anyone’s mind, let them hear you ROAR!
